Many years ago there was a big discussion between 2 great mechs on this subject. Yes, you can use a paperclip but it's not the best way to do it. There should be a post there that tells you which two contacts to jump to reset. Why do you need to reset? I replaced 5 TPS not the bikes fault and never had to reset after install. Sometimes after the bike is running crappy just turn the key off and wait 30 seconds and it resets something and works fine.
I remember a post about pulling the connector apart in the headlight housing to reset something but it also zeros the odometer sometimes. Do some research. May 2, 3. Luke, This is what I have used courtesy of another site can't recall which. TPS Setting 1.The purpose of life is growth and development. When we cease to grow, we die. Therefore we must always be advancing and progressing forward, for this is the great law of life and living.
And the automotive industry is perhaps the greatest example of that.
It is always advancing, always growing and always coming out with better pieces of machinery. But as engines continue to produce staggering amounts of power and emissions take a toll on the environment there has come a time when mechanical advancements solely cannot do the job of keeping the engine in sound health all the time.
Here the ECU comes to play. ECU decides this and accordingly fires the spark plugs. Idle speed control: It controls the idle speed of the engine depending on the ambient temperature, engine oil temperature and coolant temperature of an engine.
This is the reason that when starting the engine for the first time in the morning, the RPM is more compared to normal idle RPM. This is controlled by the ECU. Repairs could be made with chewing gum foil and gum. You also needed to make these repairs, often--progress is generally a good thing.
Today, we have ECU tuning. There is something wonderful about turning a couple screws and getting a noticeable change in how your bike runs, altering the idle point, getting the fuel spot on and having a blast right after it's adjusted.
It's a great part of the riding experience - until you need to adjust it again… and again… and again. One of the best parts of modern fuel injection is the "set it and forget it" stability and peace of mind it offers. That's not to say a carburetor couldn't be stable like that - they just weren't more often than they were. So how do you get back some of the magical feeling of adjusting your motorcycle to make it run better than the factory settings? We explain the basics of ECU tuning.
ECU tuning is the art and science of cracking the code that the factory installs in your motorcycle's brain and giving it an upgrade. Tweaking your ECU means removing things like low RPM power restrictions, closed loop fuel maps, error codes when changing parts, and a slew of other options. It enables you to take a lackluster motorcycle with twitchy throttle control and turn it into that smooth powerful road monster you expected. A typical reprogramming or "reflash" of your ECU can vary pretty wildly in price.
We found out right away that the credentials of those who are offering to do ECU mods can swing wildly; there are people who purchased an ECU programmer and do this as a hobby. Be wary of these folks. In most cases, you'll have no warranty and done improperly this can really damage your motor.
We decided to use a trusted brand and company called ECUnleashed. There are a couple ways to have this service performed. You can take it to an authorized tuning center and they can do all the work, or you can take the ECU out and send it to ECUnleashed and have it programmed. If you have a tuning center close by this is quicker as they can get the map prebuilt and sent to them.
At most, the work will take a couple of hours. Sending it in to ECUnleashed can take a week or more, depending on how far away from California you live. We have discussed modifications and a general review here and here previously, but like everything here at RideApart, we wanted to make it even better. The process is both simple and complex, as with all things computer-related. The ECU is removed from the motorcycle and connected to a programmer.
Usually software is installed on a laptop but sometimes is a stand alone module or other system. The software allows access to the programming in the ECU and by changing parity bits and field options you can change how the ECU carries out its instructions.Allowing someone to work on the mechanics and on the electronics of your own motorbike means to really trust a team that must be composed only by expert tuners. That being said, the ECU or Electronic Control Unit of cars is pre-set to suit the requirements of all, and it can be adapted to the individual driving style of its owners. First of all, it is important to understand what an ECU system is and what it does in your car. This RAM is backed-up by a battery, so that it remains saved even when the engine is off. This means that it reads the saved values every time you turn on your engine, and starts from there only, instead of starting from zero.
When you decide to reset your ECU systemyou intend to clear all the saved logs and long term memory that your ECU system has till date.
These logs include idle speed, spark, fuel etc. Trouble codes are also saved in the ECU system for diagnostic purposes.
When you reset your ECU, you will set these values to a neutral default, and also clear all the saved trouble codes. Now that you have made up your mind to reset your ECU systemjust follow these instructions and be safe:.
The basic step towards resetting the ECU system is to remove the backup power source altogether. To keep the values saved, cars have a fuse that goes right into the battery. Usually, this is the same fuse and line that powers up your radio. Instead of opening your bonnet and removing the earth lead, you can also disconnect the battery from your car by pulling the fuse that powers up your radio or footlights.
You can find this fuse near your fuse box, usually on the lower right hand side of your footlight controls. Follow these step by step instructions for this method:. Once you have reset your ECU systemit is important to drive the car for around 30 minutes to educate it about your driving style. Whether you are interested in increasing its performance or making your car more flexible and economical, drive it in the same style and your ECU system will adapt to your individual driving style.
I understand that I have to mod the exhaust to free flow as well to accompany the increase in exhaust due to the new filter. One of my friends suggested that i need to add something called as a "Piggy back" ECU before the existing ECU so that it can compensate the changes. My question is why? The reason for this is that your existing ECU, whether it be on a bike or in a car, has a range of inputs and a range out outputs, and a mapping between them.
As long as your inputs are within the ranges expected, it may well be able to cope with the changed architecture, however there are two common problems:.
For the majority of cases, point 1 is irrelevant, as you aren't changing the mapping requirements dramatically, but point 2 can happen relatively easily if the stock ECU is limited in its mapping permutations. Contrary to what the name implies, a "free-flowing" intake impacts the pressure at the valve inlet and not the volume of fresh inlet air per cycle.
Let's assume that the stock air intake is really bad and drops pressure by 14 in. Under similar inlet conditions, the stock filter would yield the following:. So that's less than 0. In the absence of fueling correction, a stoich AFR would increase from Lean, but not exactly anorexic. Most fuel-injected systems are capable of making fueling corrections to ensure that AFR's are what they ought to be.

You don't need to get a custom exhaust either as the answer below explains. Though, you should get them anyway! A good piggy back ecu designed for your bike could give you substantial performance gains. It's designed to work in all sorts of altitude and temperature i.Today, in this modern era where Fuel Injection System has taken over good old Carburetors, the power delivery is managed by Engine Control Unit ECU that electronically controls a series of actuators on an internal combustion engine to ensure optimal engine performance.
ECU Programming: Just like carburetor tuning, this is not an easy process. The greater the RPM, more the ignition timing would advance. Programming an ECU is removing things like low RPM power restrictions, closed loop fuel maps, errors when upgrading parts and a plenty of other options.
Motorcycle ECU Remapping- All you need to know
With the default factory settings, the ECU is setup for use with balanced performance and fuel economy; by remapping the ECU, we can make an engine run more efficiently or create more power by increasing efficiency of the engine. Throttle restrictions are removed and this gives a considerable power gain in lower gears. Timing retard is also removed to make engine rev faster. Also, it is not just about smoothness and power, in some cases the rider may opt for a better fuel economy.
Although a map file extracted from an ECU will actually contain several maps, Eg. Boost map, Fuel pressure map, Injection quantity map, lambda map, etc, which we will address in the later part of this article. Jul 26, Copyright - All Rights Reserved.
